The book delineates the histories and distribution of ethno-cultural and religious groups within Sri Lanka and indicates interactions and conflicts between them. Currently, this is especially important issue because the country has a convoluted history of ethnic and cultural tensions particularly since independence that led to a civil war for three decades ended in the recent past. It also summarises the history of and issues within museums in Sri Lanka.
