Cambodia’s Tonle Sap – the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia – is facing a crisis. Located in Northwest Cambodia, this vast body of water was once one of the world’s most vibrant ecosystems. But, according to the Mekong River Commission, since 2018 the volume of the lake has dropped below its historical average. A deadly combination of the climate crisis, overfishing, and upstream dams is threatening both the ecology of the lake and the livelihoods of the communities of floating villages that call it home.
