Forests have played a vital role in the socioeconomic and cultural life of the tribal people of India, majority of whom lives in isolation in the forested regions of the country with perfect harmony, security and trust for many centuries and developed a symbiotic relationship with the forest. Forests are the basic support system for tribals. At the same time the survival and maintenance of forests are also equally dependent on tribals as they are protective for forests. Women have been primary players in the collection, processing, and marketing of forest produce who gather the bulk of food, fodder, fuel, gums, resins, herbal medicines and other forest products.
