Product Description

This book is a biography of three of Japan's three great evil women, Hojo Masako, Hino Tomiko, and Yodo-dono, written in English with a Japanese cultural background. The first chapter describes Hojo Masako, the wife of Minamoto no Yoritomo, who founded the Kamakura Shogunate. She was called the Nun Shogun and was called an evil woman because of her strong desire for politics and jealous nature. The second chapter focuses on Hino Tomiko, a woman who lived from the late Muromachi period to the late Sengoku period and the wife of the eighth Shogun of the Muromachi Shogunate, Ashikaga Yoshimasa. She became a central figure in politics in place of her husband who had no interest in politics and ran the Shogunate, but her actions and personality led to her being called an evil woman and a miser. The third chapter focuses on Yodo-dono, a woman from the Sengoku period to the early Edo period, who was a concubine of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and the daughter of Oda Nobunaga's sister, Ichi. She was criticized as an evil woman because of her high pride and fiery temper. The final chapter considers whether these women were actually evil women according to 21st century Japanese standards. It might be interesting to read about Japanese history and culture in English.
