Focusing on the Uli heritage of the Igbo of south-eastern Nigeria, this book takes a fresh look at the work of traditional women painters from the region and its influence on the work of some modern Nigerian artists, especially those trained at, or associated with, the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. Through its rich, eclectic contents and the epochal exhibition which it commemorates, it aims to draw attention to the immense potential of Uli beyond the "ivory tower" of high art where it appears to have run its course in the last 30 years.
