A poem on a page is, before anything else, seen. And sometimes in the first seeing is a reaction maybe familiarity, or curiosity, (hopefully) wonder, or maybe unease, or (hopefully not) boredom – a germ of an “attitude” toward the poem. Appearance hence affects the reader before the words do. Some poets occasionally depart from the traditional stanzas or blocks of verse, as a number didi in decades past (while some painters “freed paint” onto canvas).
