South Africa’s liberation struggle had many heroes and heroines. One such heroine whose story of determination, leadership against all odds, sacrifice and heartache, has until now remained untold, is Mrs. Magdalene Mokone Makoe (Kgasi Mmakgwalepe, Kwenanyana Mogobe’ a Pelle ‘a Rauwele). Working in the hotel industry where the housekeeping staff, most of them women, bore the brunt of apartheid’s atrocious discrimination and gender-based violence, Maggy, as she was popularly referred to, spoke up and spoke out. She took a leadership stance and suffered the consequences from an unforgiving, oppressive, and repressive apartheid regime. This is her story, her role played out bravely and proudly for her country’s freedom; a story told in detail and with passion by her granddaughter, Suzan Skhosana.
