The art of Cai Luong was born in the South at the beginning of the twentieth century and has experienced ups and downs in history. From its peak in the 1930s to 1960s, when Cai Luong plays attracted tens of thousands of audiences to major theaters in Saigon and neighboring provinces, Cai Luong became an indispensable part of the cultural life of the Southerners. In 2013, UNESCO recognized Don Ca Tai Tu as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Cai Luong theater art is inherited and developed from the art of Southern Don Ca Tai Tu, which has recently been recognized as a valuable cultural heritage, with many efforts through TV programs and conservation projects.
