“Heist In the Hutt” is about a gang of out-of-town criminals who were active in both Australia and New Zealand in the late 60s and early 70s. They are all dangerous people and are armed on all their criminal enterprises. They keep low profiles and have outwardly straight lives in New Zealand but meet about twice per year in either country to burgle a jewellery manufacturing company.Their leader is Charlie Toth, a Hungarian New Zealander, a refugee from World War 2. He is a cold-hearted, psychopathic killer and a very effective planner of crimes. They burgle Cohens Jewellers in Lower Hutt one Monday morning at 3.00 a.m. A passing police patrol discovers them and this results in the shooting deaths of Sergeant Paul Brannigan and Constable Pat O’Flaherty. A massive police team is set up under the leadership of Detective Inspector Quentin de Sommerville to locate and arrest the gang. There is also the story of young probationary constable Jimmy Hennessey and his girlfriend Annie. Jimmy was Pat’s best friend and he actually finds the bodies on his beat. The book tells the story of how good police work on his behalf leads to the initial breakthrough in the investigation. The book shows the more human side of both the criminals and some of the police officers. The main characters have interesting back stories that come out through the book.A fast-moving, detailed outline of a homicide investigation running in parallel with a man-hunt and its dramatic ending.
